Women in the Canadian Military: 1885 to Present A Humanities Study of the Four Major Schools of Feminist Thought

Activity Overview

This course is the most popular offering of the Humanities Departments in Ontario. At its core is the exploration of Schools of Thought. This is one of the most interesting and sometimes most challenging aspects of our course. In some ways Feminism can be the most challenging because its ideals, goals and beliefs are frequently misunderstood and misrepresented. Some have argued that there are as many types of Feminism as there are women. This project has students explore the four of the major Feminist Schools of Thought: Maternal, Liberal, Marxist and Post-Feminism and apply them to women who have served in Canada’s military through time.

The exploration begins with a class examination of the four major schools of Feminist Thought though a short video and handout.  Then in small groups the students will examine specific examples of women in the Canadian Military. The groups will then give a five minute presentation that outlines their answer to where their topic fits in the schools.  As a final critical thinking summative task, the student will be asked to write a short paragraph that requires them to apply their knowledge
