Activity Overview

The technology used by the Canadian Army has dramatically evolved over time. Canada’s involvement in the War in Afghanistan (2001-2014) forced the Canadian Army to review its equipment and upgrade according to the landscape and geographical context and the military strategy in the region. The LAV III (Light Armoured Vehicle) served Canada well during Afghanistan but also had its limitations due to casualties from IEDs (improvised explosive devices) that had been planted in the ground across the battle zones. LAVs have been turned into monuments placed across Canada with the goal of honouring the men and women who served but who did not return from combat in Afghanistan.

These activities will allow students to understand the role LAVs have played in the war in Afghanistan and to explore the communities across Canada that honour the men and women who served using them.
